The answer depends on three things: headcount, duration, and whether alcohol is being served. Here's the general planning framework used for events across Del Norte, CO.
Plan for approximately 1 portable toilet per 50 guests per 4 hours. A 200-person event running 4 hours needs roughly 4 units at minimum.
Alcohol increases usage significantly. Bump your ratio to 1 unit per 35–40 guests. That same 200-person event now needs 5–6 units to prevent lines.
Every additional 2 hours beyond the base window adds roughly 25% to your unit requirement. An 8-hour event should plan for 5–6 units even without alcohol.
OSHA guidelines recommend 1 unit per 10 workers for a standard shift. Longer shifts or remote sites without facilities may warrant more.
One thing that matters more than the number of units is placement. Restrooms positioned far from activity centers will see less use while the closest unit gets overwhelmed. We help clients think through placement when we confirm the order. Under-renting porta potties is one of the most common event planning mistakes — the cost difference between 4 and 6 units is minor compared to the guest experience problem created by lines.
